NDI IKWUANO UMUAHIA HAVE SPOKEN: IT MUST BE IKUKU IN 2027

In every political generation, there comes a name that unsettles the comfortable and comforts the unsettled. In Ikwuano, Umuahia North and Umuahia South, that name is Ikuku. Whispered in ward meetings, debated in beer parlours, studied in strategy rooms, it carries a weight that is difficult to dismiss.
THE MAN BEFORE THE TITLE
Long before the mace, before the Speaker’s gavel, Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, FNSE, had already built a constituency without holding office. An engineer trained at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, and a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, he chose to engineer hope first. That choice became the Direct Touch Initiative.
AN ASSEMBLY OF MANY FIRSTS
History will remember his legislative career in two strokes. As Majority Leader of the 6th Abia State House of Assembly (2015-2019), he learned the House. As Speaker of the 7th Assembly (2019-2023), he led it. Under his leadership, the Assembly was deliberately branded an Assembly of Many Firsts, not for drama, but for dynamism.
LAWS WITH A HUMAN FACE
His doctrine was simple: law must have a human face, not intricate technicalities. And so the 7th Assembly under him passed over 17 people-oriented bills, each solving a human problem. Governance, for him, was not grammar.
THE AUTONOMY THAT MADE HISTORY
The defining law was HAB1 2019, the Abia State House of Assembly Service Commission Law, which granted the legislature financial autonomy and brought Abia at par with national standards. He followed it with financial autonomy for the judiciary. For the first time in Abia’s history, the 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 budgets were passed before January 1st.
THE DIASPORA FEAT THAT DREW THE PRESIDENCY
Abia became the first state in the entire federation to pass the Abians in Diaspora Commission Law. Sponsored by Dr Mike Ukoha but given accelerated hearing by Speaker Orji, it drew commendation from Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa and the Presidency. No other state had done it.
LAWS THAT TOUCHED THE BODY AND SOUL
Other landmark enactments included the Abia State Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law 2019, hailed as life-changing; the Abia State Agency for Free Home Healthcare Services Bill; the Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre Umuahia Bill 2019; the Tele-Health Care Agency Bill 2022; and the Food Banks Bill 2022 to address hunger with dignity.
SECURITY, SAFETY AND ORDER
On security and institution building, his House passed the Abia State Security Bill, the Safety Commission Bill, the Protection Agency Bill 2019, the Donor Agencies Trust Fund Bill, the Marketing and Quality Management Agency Bill 2019, and the Water and Sewage Development Law.
TRANSPARENCY YOU COULD WATCH
For the first time, plenary sessions were live-streamed. Abians could watch their laws being made from their homes and offices. The Assembly complex itself was remodelled into a world-class legislative complex, and the National Assembly would later celebrate Abia as the first to concur on the 44 items in the 5th Alteration of the 1999 Constitution.
THE PHILANTHROPY THAT PRECEDED POLITICS
Yet what truly frightens opponents is not the mace. It is what came before the mace. The Direct Touch Initiative was reaching out to Ndi Ikwuano Umuahia even before he ventured into politics. It was not a campaign slogan; it was a lifestyle.
BOREHOLES, TRANSFORMERS AND CLASSROOMS
Through Direct Touch, he sank water boreholes, provided electricity transformers, renovated health centres, built a 3-classroom block with water and toilets at Loriter Primary School, renovated and fenced St Michael’s Primary School, re-roofed Amazukwu Girls Secondary School, rebuilt its toilets, and regrassed its field.
THE HUMAN EMPOWERMENT MACHINE
The ledger is long: free eye medical outreach at World Bank Housing Estate, Umuahia, with drugs and medicated lenses; scholarships for indigent pupils; cars, tricycles, sewing machines, grinding machines, barbing clippers, wrappers and cash gifts. He flagged off free ICT training for 300 youths in partnership with Naprima Technologies, teaching phone repairs, soap, shoe and paint production.
THE STRUCTURE CALLED IKUKUOMA
He is called Ikukuoma Abia, the comforting wind, for a reason. The wind does not wait for permission to touch you. That direct, personal inspection of projects created a grassroots structure that no poster can buy.
THE PRIMARY THAT SHOOK THE CALCULATIONS
Today, Rt Hon Orji is the flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress to represent Ikwuano Umuahia Federal Constituency in 2027. And it is on record that in a fiercely contested primary, supervised by Barr. Erasmus Cishak, he won in all 32 Wards of the Federal Constituency. Such totality is rare.
THE VOW TO CORRECT 2023
What animates him most going into 2027 is not the title, but the people. Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji draws his inspiration from the people themselves, who have openly expressed massive confidence in him, trooping out in ward after ward to affirm him. In markets, churches, town halls and on the farms, Ndi Ikwuano Umuahia have made a solemn vow to correct the mistake of 2023 in 2027, to reclaim a representation that speaks their language and feels their pulse. That popular resolve is his real manifesto.
WHY THE 2027 EQUATION FEARS HIM
As we approach the legislative elections of 2027, his opponents understand that he is not a newcomer to be taught on the job; he is a former presiding officer who knows how budgets are defended. And his party, the APC, now enjoys federal incumbency, with him as Abia State Patron and Chairman of the City Boy Movement.
THE ISSUE-BASED THREAT
He has chosen an issue-based campaign. When a man with boreholes already in the ground talks about water, it lands differently. When a man who already trained 300 youths talks about youth employment, it is not a promise, it is a reminder.
THE FEAR OF A TESTED BRAND
They are afraid of Ikuku because his brand is tested. The Ikwuano/Umuahia voter of 2027 is more educated, more aware, and more demanding. The Ikuku 2027 Mandate Group has already framed it as “Representation with Experience, Legislation with Results.”
THE FINAL VERDICT BEFORE THE VOTE
In the final analysis, fear in politics often comes not from what a man might do, but from what he has already done. The 7th Assembly’s many firsts are on record. The transformers are still humming. The boreholes are still flowing.
A COVENANT, NOT JUST A CANDIDACY
Rt Hon Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji has entered a covenant with Ndi Ikwuano Umuahia. The question for 2027 is therefore not whether Ikuku is ready. The question is whether Ikwuano Umuahia is ready to send a legislator who already knows the way to Abuja, and more importantly, knows the way back home.
