Gone are the days when JAMB scores are only used as a criteria for admission. Presently, your O’Level grade and post UTME scores also plays an important role. For those of you aspiring to gain admission into the University of Lagos (UNILAG), in this post I will be teaching you how to calculate UNILAG cut off mark or aggregate scores for all courses offered in the higher institution.
The cut off mark of UNILAG is the least score every prospective students need to have in their post UTME in order for them to secure admission into the university. Studying any preferred course in the University of Lagos is possible, as long as you meet the required cut off mark. Do you really want to know how to calculate UNILAG aggregate cut off mark? This post will teach you by giving you a practical example.
What are Cut off Marks?
Cut off marks can simply be defined as a benchmark score set by higher institutions. which aspiring students have to meet if they want to get admitted to study in the respective institution. It differs from one higher institution to another here in Nigeria. Students who score higher than the cut off mark tend to get preferential treatment in the admission process. This is the more reason you should try to score way higher than the set cut off mark.
JAMB Fixed Cut off Mark
JAMB has set a general cut off mark for all candidates who wants to apply for universities, colleges of education, and polytechnics, which is 180. Candidates who have higher scores, will have the opportunity to apply for their desired courses and get preferential treatment. Every universities and higher institutions have its own unique cut off marks and requirements, let me show you that of UNILAG.
UNIILAG Cut off Mark For All Courses
The University of Lagos (UNILAG) is one of the prestigious educational institution in Nigeria. The institution does not have a specific cut off mark for all courses. if you score at least 180 in your UTME, you are qualified to apply for any of your desired course.
However, it does not end there. Simply applying for a particular course does not guarantee you admission, because there are thousands of other candidates applying for that same course and the department have limited slots. This automatically means that admission into a particular course is guaranteed once you are among the few that scored high in total aggregate scores. The admission process in the University of Lagos is highly competitive, that is why you need score above the following UNILAG cut off marks in the following courses:
For Medicine and Nursing, you need to score at least 220 to 240
For Pharmacy, Physiology, Common Law, Mass Communication, and Anatomy, you need to score at least 200
For Agriculture, Engineering, Microbiology, Geology, Biochemistry, Computer Science, and English Language, you will need to score at least 190.
For other courses, you will have to score at least 180.
How To Calculate UNILAG Cut off Mark and Aggregate Score
If you are searching for how to calculate UNILAG cut off mark or your aggregate score then you need to follow these practical steps: You can easily calculate your O’Level, UTME and Post UTME if you follow this scheme.
Post UTME equals 30%
UTME equals 50%
O’Level equals 20%
For you to have a better understanding on how to calculate UNILAG aggregate score. let us use Chika as a case study, that is candidate seeking for admission into UNILAG.
How To Calculate For O’Level
A1 = 4.0
B2 = 3.6
B3 = 3.2
C4 = 2.8
C5 = 2.4
C6 = 2.0
Note: You should remember that you need to calculate using only the five O’Level subjects needed for your course.
Let us assume Chika who wished to study Medicine and Surgery in UNILAG, has the following grades in her SSCE result:
Mathematics = B2
English = A1
Chemistry = B2
Physics = C5
Biology = A1
Using the grade marks above, her UNILAG O’level grades will be calculated like this;
3.6+4.0+3.6+2.4+4.0 = 17.6
Chika’s O’Level grade has summed up to 17.6. I hope this step was understood by you.
How To Calculate JAMB (UTME) Score
To calculate Chika’s JAMB or UTME score, we need to divide her JAMB score by eight (8). This means that your final aggregate score is also dependent on your UTME score, so you need to perform better in UTME if you want your chances of securing admission into UNILAG to be high.
Let us say for example Chika scored 247 in UTME, her total score will be divided by 8 as shown in the calculation below:
247/8 = 30.88.
Now we have gotten Chika’s O’Level score, and UTME score, the next step now is to know her Post UTME score…Let us go!
UNILAG Post UTME Score
The post UTME score represents 30% of the total UNILAG aggregate score. If you have not written the UNILAG post UTME, and given a score, then calculating your aggregate score will be difficult.
You should also note that any candidate who scored below 12% in the UNLAG post UTME will be automatically disqualified, irrespective of the candidate’s JAMB score.
So, let us assume Chika scored 23% in her UNILAG post UTME. Our final step now is to calculate her aggregate score.
How To Calculate UNILAG Aggregate Score
Now we have calculated Chika’s O’Level score, UTME, and post UTME score, let us add up the figures in order to arrive at her UNILAG aggregate score.
Remember, Chika have the following grades:
O’Level grade = 17.6
UTME grade = 30.88
Post UTME grade = 23%
Her aggregate score would therefore be calculated as follows:
17.6 + 30.88 + 23 = 71.48
If Chika’s aggregate score is equal or higher than the cut off mark of Medicine and Surgery, she will be admitted into the department. But if it is lower than the cut off mark, then she will be denied admission.
Hope with this explanation, you have finally learnt how to calculate UNILAG cut off mark or aggregate score for any particular course offered by the institution.
