The 2019 Abia State Governorship Debate took place yesterday, 22nd of January 2019 at Abia hotels in Umuahia. The debate was organized by the Abia State Election Debate Team in collaboration with various media houses like Flo FM, Umuahia, Vision Africa Radio, Umuahia, Buzz FM, Aba, Abia Facts Online TV, and Online Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (Abia State Chapter).
Governorship Candidates Present at the Debate and Their Respective Political Parties
- Dr, Okezie Ikpeazu – Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
- Dr. Alex Otti – All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA)
- Hon. Blessing Nwagba – Social Democratic Party (SDP)
- Bar. Emeka Uwakolam – Accord Party (AP)
The debate lasted for about 3 hours (with a shot break interval inclusive) and each of the Governorship candidates was given ample opportunities to tell the people of Abia, both and home and diasporas, what they intend to offer after being elected into government. The good part was that the information was sent live millions of Abians around the world as the event was aired live of Radio stations, and also streamed live on various YouTube and Facebook Channels of partnering media houses and online media practitioners.
Speaking to newsmen after the debate, the chairman of the Abia State Election Debate Team, Mr. Emenike Iroegbu, told reporters that the debate provided a platform and important opportunity for the governorship candidates to ask critical questions amongst themselves (being opponents) on plans and policies to move Abia forward.
The 2019 Abia governorship debate was a huge success because questions from the debate prompted interesting responses among the candidates. The areas deliberated on are; security challenges, education, agriculture, health, poverty alleviation programmes, among others.

It is obvious that the 2019 Abia Governorship Debate is far the biggest election debate ever to take place in Abia State. Over 1 million Abians was engaged thought the event and up till now, the aftermath is still been felt, and it remains the talk of the town.
Portraying the success of the debate, the governorship candidates ended it all with handshakes and group photographs which simply shows, election is not war.
Millions of Abians are now prepared to choose the right candidate who will take them to the promise land, as they head to the polls in the forthcoming 2019 Governorship Election. All thanks to the medium created by the Abia State Election Debate Team.
