The Twitter space in Nigeria went agog earlier today as a tweet calling the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, an opportunist was liked by the Twitter handle of INEC Nigeria.

The tweet was later unliked by the handle after much criticism has come from Nigerians, especially from the supporters of the Labour party presidential candidate. They claimed the action carried out by the handler of INEC’s Twitter profile has revealed the extent of compromise the independent body has gone with respect of the 2023 general election.

INEC Has Released a Statement Concerning an Anti-Obi Tweet Liked By it's Twitter Handle

To address the issue, INEC just released a statement on its Twitter handle which reads as follows.

“The attention of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been drawn to a post on its Twitter handle, liking a post relating to one of the 18 Presidential candidates.”

“The Commission is an independent electoral body and does not have preference for any candidate or political party. The Commission assures all Nigerians of its neutrality and will conduct a general election that is free and fair to all. The allegiance of the Commission is to the people of Nigeria.”

“In the meantime, the Commission is investigating the circumstances that led to the liking of the said post and will take appropriate disciplinary actions if an infraction is established.”
