From Michael Okpara to Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji: Why Ọhụhụ Needs Orji More Than Ever – By Mandate 27 Group

Ọhụhụ is a proud and ancient clan with a long memory. The greatest name in its story is Doctor Michael Iheonukara Okpara, the elder statesman and Premier of the old Eastern Region, who put Ọhụhụ on the map of Nigerian leadership and showed that a son of this soil could build for a whole people. Today we are being asked to forget that standard and settle for politics of birthplace. We must refuse, and ask instead: who has built for Ọhụhụ since Doctor Michael Iheonukara Okpara?

From Michael Okpara to Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji: Why Ọhụhụ Needs Orji More Than Ever

The Standard Doctor Michael Iheonukara Okpara Set

Doctor Michael Iheonukara Okpara is remembered for vision, agricultural development and service that reached ordinary people. His legacy is the measure against which every Ọhụhụ leader should be judged: not who shouts loudest about the clan, but who delivers for it.

By that measure, the Orji political family stands out.

The Record of an Ibeku Son

Former Governor Theodore Ahamefule Orji is an Ibeku son, yet his hands touched Ọhụhụ land more than those of many who claim it by birth:

  • The Umukabia–Ohuhu Road: a landmark 26-kilometre project linking autonomous communities across the clan.
  • The Nkata–Alike–Umukabia–Ohuhu Road: executed under his rural upgrade drive to restore access to the agrarian belt of Ọhụhụ.
  • Nkwoegwu to Express Road: a dual-access link to the Enugu–Umuahia–Aba Expressway. Today’s Representative of the Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency is its highest beneficiary, since the road crosses straight from his entrance gate.
  • The 33-Kilovolt High-Tension Feeder Line (Nkwo Egwu): one of five evacuation lines from the new Ohiya Sub-station, routed to Nkwo Egwu to steady power for homes, small enterprises and markets.

He asked for no clan certificate. He saw a people in need and delivered.

The Son Who Carried It On

Right Honourable Engineer Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji, popularly known as Ikuku, rose to House Leader and then Speaker of the Seventh Abia State House of Assembly. As Representative of Umuahia Central State Constituency, he continued the work across Ọhụhụ land in Umuahia North Local Government Area:

  • Sports and youth: a 1,000-capacity mini-stadium at Saint William’s Memorial Secondary School, Afugiri.
  • Education: a block of classrooms in Umukabia, plus renovations and equipment for primary and secondary schools across the clan.
  • Water: solar-powered reticulated water projects in several autonomous communities.
  • Power: high-capacity transformers to end low-voltage hardship.
  • Empowerment: generators, sewing machines, grinding machines and farm inputs for youths and women, free medical outreaches including eye treatment, Information and Communication Technology training, startup grants and scholarships.

What Have Our Own Done?

Lately, Ọhụhụ sons have held the seat of Representative, the House of Assembly, the Federal Character Commission, the Local Government Chairmanship, permanent secretaryships and the heads of government institutions. Aside from the achievements above, what exactly have they done for the Ọhụhụ nation? Holding office is not the same as delivering. A position is a platform, and it is judged by what is built on it.

Against Clannish Politics

Clannish politics rewards a man for his village instead of his performance. It has produced beneficiaries of goodwill who turn against their benefactors. The man who once benefited from good governance was elected in 2023 and has failed once again. Doctor Michael Iheonukara Okpara never governed by clan sentiment, and his legacy deserves better than that.

Development has no clan. A road does not ask the contractor’s village, and a transformer does not check the surname of the man who installed it.

Ọhụhụ Needs Him Now

After Doctor Michael Iheonukara Okpara, no one has done more for Ọhụhụ than the Orji family. Theodore Ahamefule Orji laid the foundation and Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji built on it, and together they have kept alive the spirit of development that Doctor Okpara began. With infrastructure gaps widening, youths in need of opportunity and communities waiting for roads, water and power, Ọhụhụ needs a tested hand in the green chamber.

Right Honourable Engineer Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji still tops the chart of development in Ọhụhụ land after Doctor Michael Iheonukara Okpara. He deserves to be sent to the green chamber of the National Assembly to do more.

A Call to Every Son and Daughter

Shun partisanship. Reject clan sentiment. Vote for the record. To honour Doctor Michael Iheonukara Okpara is to choose the one who builds. Ọhụhụ deserves performance, and Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji has the receipts.
