Abia Online Media Publishers Condemns Attempt To Gag The Media In Abia State

Recall that the Chairman, Abia Online Media Practitioners, Comrade Ugochukwu Nwankwo, was unlawfully arrested together with others close to his office around Item Street, Umuahia but was later released unconditionally.

Reacting to his release in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Secretary Abia Online Media Practitioners, Izuchukwu Nwokoma, the Association commended CP Agbede for her swift response which ensured the release of her Chairman, adding that the CP’s action shows that she is not a party to harassment, intimidation or incarceration of Media men and women in the State.

While calling on Policemen in the country to stem the tide of harassment of people for no just cause, Abia Online Media Practitioners, called on the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba to address the high level police harassment and intimidation going on in the South-East, stressing that it has taken a frightening dimension.

The Association added that it was worrisome that Policemen storm lawful gathering of people, intimidate as well as harass them in the process without cogent reasons, revealing that in most cases, business owners lose huge revenue in event of these happenings as those arrested are taken away without offsetting their bills.

Abia OMPAN also commended the Speaker Abia State House of Assembly, Right Hon. Chinedum Orji, for his intervention in the unlawful arrest of her Chairman.
